For fans of: Sludge and Post-metal
Best activity when listening: Playing the album as loud as possible and bathe in the atmosphere.

The production this release is top notch, it's loud, heavy and aggressive when it needs to be however it's atmosperic, rich and melodic during the post-metal passages, especially with the scathing lead guitar. The lead guitar sounds heavy and slightly fuzzy, but still has an edge to it, the notes and chords are easily audible. The bass is full and thick, producing engaging and captivating bass lines which add another melodic layer to the song.

The album has a short opener track "Pluveophil" which eases into the album, with a heavy and doomy intro riff drenched in atmosphere and switching between different textures which sets the pretense for this album.

The Trio can create massive and immersive soundscapes like on the track "Karoshi", but tracks like "Trümmerfeld" the song is more sludge influenced and aggressive, focusing more on bruising riffs and pummelling drums. The harsh, sharp vocals are very prominent in the song. It would be interesting to hear some clean vocals during the atmospheric sections, this would provide an extra dimension and add to the experience.

The drums have a touch of reverb and don't force their way to the front of the mix, instead doing a solid job of providing tempo changes and keeping rhythm. During the crushing riff halfway through "Karoshi" the instruments all fuse together to create an aggressive and unrelenting section that is my highlight of the album. The drums are also a key factor during the build-ups and texture switch ups.

Tarasque don't like to get too comfortable in a groove, they're constantly changing the dynamics and textures, doing it with interesting transitions and climatic build ups. There are some excellent post-metal inspired melodic sections that totally contrast with the abrasive and loud sludge passages like on the tracks "Alles Nichts" and "Staub und Zeit".

Overall I will give this debut an 8.5/10, it's a brilliant release, Tarasque is a band that's not afraid to experiment and try different tempos, textures or dynamics. They can create huge sounds apes and deliver mammothian sized riffs. However the monotonous screams do get a bit stale, also the ambient sections do lack clean vocals which would contrast the harsh vocals, bringing more sonic diversity to the album. The album is on the shorter side at around 27 minutes runtime over 5 songs, around 40 minutes or so would make the album feel fully fleshed out and complete, it would also give more time for maybe a solo or further experimentation.
